Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council is committed to the protection and enhancement of biodiversity within Blaenau Gwent. This is achieved through the implementation of the Local Biodiversity Action Plan for Blaenau Gwent in partnership with a wide range of organisations and individuals.
Much of the Reserve was notified in 1984 as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is open woodland, interspersed with wet flushes and areas that were once meadows. The woods form part of one of the most westerly and highest natural beech woods in Britain.
Blaenau Gwent Local Access Forum are an independent advisory body working with Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council to improve your enjoyment of Blaenau Gwents countryside whilst safeguarding its future.
Despite the fact that the area has traditionally been thought of as an industrial area, mainly for coal mining and steel production, its land use is now predominantly rural with over 77% of the land area given over to farmland, commons and open spaces.
